This project focused on transforming a previously underdefined room into a welcoming dining space at the heart of the home. Positioned between the lounge and kitchen, the room needed to function as both a destination and a natural walkway, balancing practicality with visual appeal.
To enhance the sense of height and proportion, the area above the picture rail was kept crisp and light, drawing the eye upward and creating a more open feel. Below, a soft, muted palette grounds the space, allowing the architectural features to stand out without overwhelming the room.
An oak herringbone floor introduces warmth and subtle pattern, complementing the home’s Victorian character. This choice helps anchor the space and creates a strong visual link with adjoining rooms.
Existing alcove shelving was retained and painted in the same tone as the walls, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the background while still providing practical storage and display. This approach softens the overall look and avoids visual clutter in a transitional space.
A combination of bench and chair seating offers flexibility for family living, making the area equally suited to everyday meals and more social occasions.
